~ Dear Swimming
Dear Swimming is a project about my adoration for swimming and the emotions that are tied to that. I competitively swam for 16 years until I moved to University, which was the insight behind this project. It began as an exploration into how far design can be pushed within this context. I had this lost love in my life that was from a sport. This project aims to champion the importance of swimming in my life and to share this connection. This was resolved as an installation piece with several graphic design elements.
I was inspired by the film Collateral Beauty, where Will Smith's character writes three letters to the abstracts of Love, Death and Time after his Daughter's passing. I chose to use my emerging interest in writing and poetry to write three love letters to swimming. They personified this relationship poetically. They are written in such a way that allows the reader to connect the words to almost anything. I wanted to translate these intangible emotions in an equally abstract way.
These three letters became the centrepiece of the installation. The concept of the installation revolved around transporting a person through their senses to a competitive swimming environment. I explored themes of loss, reflection and abstraction through the lens of competitive swimming.
Below showcases the elements of the intallation.
