~ Col de Montagne

Studio Kunze

“A catalogue of the paintings exhibited in Col de Montagne at Harper's 512, West 22nd Street, NY 10011 with a photographic record of the comings, goings, and works created by Tanya in her temporary studio at Harper's 534, at the end of summer and beginning of fall, 2023.
Images from the beginning to end of the residency are sequenced in chronological order.”

The insight for this project was based on the use of the visual cues of a calendar to mark each passing day. This created an almost journal documentation to the book. While allowing the images to be the focus, small letters and numbers symbolise the context of the sequence of their time at Harper’s. Almost like page numbers to follow the narrative.

When it came to design choices, there was a lot of play around how to best use the calendar month as a template. Ultimately, the choice was made to have the type run through in the positions it would be in if written on a classic wall calendar; months along the top with numbers below, moving horizontally through the days. Almost as if you punched a calendar month through each page. Following this was the decision to blend a mixture of black & white images with some photographs being in bold colour.

The book is very much a journal of Tanya and William’s time in New York. The use of a calendar to illustrate time passing adds to the informal documentation of the exhibit. The goal was not to specifically showcase Tanya’s artwork but to show the entire trip from the airport through the development of the artwork to opening the space to friends and the public.
